How-to instructions on removing and installing the water pump from a Ford Model A.  Part 1 covers removing, part2 covers prep and install, plus some tips and lessons learned at the end.

Water pump shaft end-play can can be up to .030" with one book recommending .010". The impeller end of the shaft can also be brazed or welded to achieve minimal end-play. The packing is placed in four layers. Once pump is well greased (two different types of grease) and engine running, tighten packing nut just enough to stop leakage. Keep fan belt tension fairly light with 3/4" to 1" belt deflection. Then go out and have some fun! Your neighbour will be impressed with your almost 90 year old ride.
